Mixed Severity Fire Regimes

Mixed severity fire regimes include both forested and nonforested landscapes that are affected by fires that characteristically burn with great complexity. Patches of low, moderate, and high intensity fire create a complex mosaic of fire effects.

The first day will be highlighted by a plenary session that will include keynote speaker Dr. Ann Bartuska, Deputy Chief of Research for the USDA Forest Service, Washington, D.C. The second day will feature concurrent sessions focusing on a wide variety of Pacific Northwest ecosystems that have mixed severity fire regimes. The third day will conclude with managerial challenges across a wide array of land management objectives: industrial forestry, multiple use, and lands managed for natural values.

The Association for Fire Ecology is sponsoring a conference on Mixed Severity Fire Regimes in Spokane, WA in November 2004. Fire ecology and fire management challenges in selected ecosystems will be covered in plenary and concurrent sessions. Pre-conference workshops will include sessions on BEHAVEPlus, FARSITE, and FCCS.
