Keynote Address - Dr. Ann Bartuska

Dr. Ann Bartuska is Deputy Chief for Research and Development, USDA Forest Service, Washington, D.C., and has served in this position for a year. Dr. Bartuska received her bachelor’s degree from Wilkes College, her master’s degree from Ohio University, and a Ph.D. in Biology from West Virginia University. Earlier in her career she held a wide variety of positions within the Forest Service: Research and Development, State and Private Forestry, Forest Health Protection, Forest Management, and Ecosystem Management. From 2001-2004, she headed the invasive species initiative at The Nature Conservancy. Recently, she was President of the Ecological Society of America, and is currently on the board of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents.

Banquet Speaker - Don Gayton

Don Gayton is an ecologist with FORREX, the Forest Research and Extension Partnership, a British Columbia charitable non-share corporation founded in 1998 to help people develop science and knowledge-based solutions to complex natural resources challenges. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University and a master’s degree in Plant Ecology from the University of Saskatchewan. Mr. Gayton, located in Nelson, B.C., has extensive experience in grasslands, dry forest ecology, and disturbance ecology. He is skilled in conflict management and in linking indigenous peoples’ knowledge with western science in natural resources management. His writing has been recognized by the Canadian Science Writers Award, the U.S. National Outdoor Book Award, and short-listed for the BC Book Awards.

         
                         
                         
                         
 

The Association for Fire Ecology is sponsoring a conference on Mixed Severity Fire Regimes in Spokane, WA in November 2004. Fire ecology and fire management challenges in selected ecosystems will be covered in plenary and concurrent sessions. Pre-conference workshops will include sessions on BEHAVEPlus, FARSITE, and FCCS.
